Transforming Trauma Episode 084: Enhancing Addiction Recovery Through NARM with Sabino Recovery Clinical Staff
A podcast brought to you by the NARM® Training Institute
In this episode of Transforming Trauma, our host Emily is joined by the clinical team of Sabino Recovery, Clinical Director Shara Turner, Lead Primary Therapist Robin Green, and Lead Family Therapist Robin Miller. Sabino Recovery is a clinically-driven, integrative, and individualized residential treatment center for trauma and addiction located in Tucson, Arizona that prides itself on looking at the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
Shara, Robin and Robin share about their trauma-informed healing approach and emphatically state, “it’s not what’s wrong with you, it’s what happened to you.” The three share that this core principle guides all of the programming at the center. They reflect on their trauma orientation and previous trauma training, and reflect about an experience where a client introduced them to the NeuroAffective Model. Once they began looking into NARM, they found it to be in complete alignment with the work at Sabino Recovery and decided to join the NARM Therapist Training. They were blown away by what they learned and have been so excited to bring NARM fully into Sabino Recovery.
Turner shares that “[Sabino Recovery] has a great platform and NARM has just enhanced that platform to be able to do the work.” Green reflects on a key takeaway from NARM being the focus on self-agency and she describes how she is incorporating this core skill into her work with residents. Miller shares how she’s been integrating NARM in working with families.
From their perspective, trauma treatment is essential in support of substance abuse recovery, as it is essential to acknowledge how unresolved developmental trauma dysregulates the nervous system and leads some people to turn toward substances to help them regulate. They are passionate about the intersection of trauma healing and addiction recovery.
In talking about their professional experiences, they also reflect on their own learning and personal experiences. All three describe how learning about their own internal experience related to complex trauma, and doing self-inquiry exercises throughout the NARM training, helped them to find greater compassion toward themselves which then helps them to show up even more compassionately with their clients.
We hope you enjoy this episode with the Sabino Recovery team. We are deeply grateful to be joined by members of the international NARM community and for the team sharing about their work and how they are using NARM to enrich their work at Sabino Recovery.
